Pawling Elementary School Newsletter  May 2018

Dear Parents and Guardians,

April has been a full, and busy month.  Our third and fourth graders completed the NYS English Language Arts assessments during the second week of April, and they will be taking their NYS Math assessments on May 1st and 2nd.

We held Kindergarten Screenings on April 18th, 19th, and 20th.  We had 59 incoming kindergartners and their parents visit our school to meet with staff, fill out paperwork, and take a tour of the building. At this point, we have roughly the same number of registrations as we had last year at this time.  If you know of any friends or family members in our district who have children turning 5 years old on or before December 1st, 2018, please let them know to call our school for some valuable information about kindergarten registration if they haven’t already done so.

On April 23rd, the PTA sponsored an author visit with children’s author and illustrator, Hudson Talbot. Students learned about the stages of story development and the writing process as they explored some of Hudson Talbot’s books.

In honor of Arbor Day, Mr. Pehmoeller and Ms. Spitzer, of “Bartlett Trees”, presented to our Kindergarten and 1st grade students about all of the wonderful things we get from trees and how important it is that we care for, and continue to plant trees.  Students loved acting out the various contributions that trees provide us, and each student was given a tree sapling to take home and plant.

Please mark your calendars for our District Budget vote that will take place on Tuesday, May 15th in the Pawling Elementary School gym from 6am to 9pm.  The PTA has an ice cream social planned for that evening, so we hope to see you!

Wellness Wisdom brought to you by our school district’s Health and Wellness Committee

Reminder: Our Annual Walk Before School Day is scheduled for Friday, June 1st.  Please mark your calendars and make sure to send your child to school with sneakers or comfortable shoes.  The rain date is scheduled for Friday, June 8th.

Coach’s Corner – brought to you by Janine Garrison, Literacy Coach

What do you do if your child comes to you and says, “I hate reading!”  Here are a few helpful suggestions that will get your child reading more in no time. (Taken from

Zero in on the child’s interests

  • Take a step back and look at what interests, excites or intrigues your child. Knowing what interests him can help you pinpoint what types of texts he may enjoy reading.

Start small

  • Just because your child likes to ride horses doesn’t mean she needs to start by reading The A-Z History of Horseback Riding; that may be intimidating—especially for a reluctant reader.  Instead, consider watching a movie about horses, like Seabiscuit or finding a magazine or graphic novel at the library that relates to the subject. Reading doesn’t need to begin with a chapter book; many other texts and various genres can be worthwhile for these readers.

Practice shared reading

  • Shared reading or reading as a family could entail taking turns reading pages, sections or chapters, or you and your child silently reading the same book. Shared reading can vary depending on your child’s age and needs. Creating safe, comfortable environments where fluent reading is modeled and where children are set up for success is key.

We are very happy to announce that Pawling Elementary School won a $1000 bonus check from the “Hannafords Helps Schools” program because PES had the most receipts submitted into the bins at our local Hannafords supermarket.  We will work collaboratively with the PTA to decide how to spend these funds to benefit our students!
